It was worded strangely, but this is what I got out of it. Ferals are typically solitary, living only with their mate. So their children set out very early to learn how to live on their own. So they likely don't possess much of a kinship with their parents while their young because it's not in their nature. To stay with their parents, it will confuse the love they have for them since it's not in their nature to be close to their parents, at least not until after they have their own mate, because they will then love their parents over their mate.
