I mean sure, he doesn't want his son to be gay, but being homosexual wasn't period typical, it was a foreign thing. And I don't think that it's a homophobic subplot or that the dad is homophobic, he just wants his son to live a good life. And I don't mean to say that being gay is wrong, I'm just saying that in the time the manhua takes place in, being gay and adopting a kid because of it would ruin everyone involved.
Plus, adopting wasn't period-typical as well, usually, adoption was only if it was the child of deceased family members, or you simply needed a child.
