The MC is the killer of the parents of the ML probably because they we're treating ML like shit and some accident lead him into forgetting to his childhood or maybe he has reppresed memory . Deep down he knows he fucked up thats why he keeps up a facade thats why he choose to be a police officer the opposite of a killer. I dont know if this has ghosts or its just hallucinations but I guess he keeps hallucinating those things because even if he is subconsciously trying to keep those memory forgotten he can never truly run away from who he really is
