I think it's an error of traduction. Homophobic doesn't make any sense in this contexte (cause well, who cares about the fact that he would be homophobic in an homophobic area?) but maybe, they have said homosexual. (And that explains why the FL thought that he will not fall in love with her)

I just hope the ML being homophobic is only a rumour because if he really is one, I won't be able to read a story where the Fl goes back in time and ends up with a person like that.
