Looks like he was an experiment. If not by the ancient civilization they're researching, it's by technology that came from it.

Also I wonder what kind of tech that ancient civilization had. Like, in the latest chapter it clearly looks like what we have in the modern day. Was it a civilization with both magic and technology? Was it technology mistaken for magic? Is the story playing out in our earth's future, after some kind of world changing event? Guess we'll have wait and read in later chapters to find out though.
