People cope with death and other hard stuff in different ways, his mother had cancer for a long time so he may have been already confortable with the idea that she was going to die. For some people it's a relief when a family member who has cancers die bc the last stage is really really bad.
Also he can be using this as a distraction of everything
I can say from my own experience that you try to do anything to forget, even if just for a little while....
