Their guardian's powers are strongest when they are happy. Since they were mentally traumatized and trust no one but themselves, the guardian's powers were weak and would not have been effective against that ass of a mother. More spoilers are Jason (I think that's his name) does eventually tell them that he is their guardian, but they doubt that and continue to feel like a burden to him/everyone.
