It's just become a stereotypical joke for them because Japanese are more formally distant when greeting one another. Skinship could even be impolite unless between close friends/families. Oh but, other people are just as formal one think, yeah but the natural greeting aren't even by shaking hands so... you should get the view.

i wonder where they got the idea that its normal for foreigners to kiss people on the lips to greet/thank em lmaoo im from france here we do « la bise » (cheeks to cheeks while making a kissing sound) when greeting someone xD
