Eljay father was there because she asked him to save Aseph, it turns out he knows Aseph parents and is also trying to protect them but when he arrived they were already injured and Aseph mother begged him to set the house on fire to save Aseph, to make the ones that are trying to kill them think that they all died. After that event Eljay father investigated who tried to kill Aseph and his family to know that it was the king's order.
And so I think maybe your theory is true

This is just a theory but I don’t think Eljay’s father killed Aseph’s family. Somehow, Eljay died saving Aspeh from the fire. I feel like the reason he was there in the first book was because he went looking for Eljay.
