It's probably mandatory to highlight the male part because of the manga's genre.

I don’t think the character is technically transgender but a transvestite. They have set him up as a boy who likes to dress as a girl but not surgically changing anything (which I think of when I think transgender....someone changing gender). They do that a lot in yaoi. Characters who like to dress feminine but want to stay male.

But if the person identifies as the sex they weren't born with they are already considered transgender and people should be respectful and treat them the way they want to be treated.
Maybe on the first chapters "he" was a travenstite (I don't remember), but right now "she" doesn't think the boy would love her because he is gay. So right now she is a woman.
Maybe (I don't know) in Japan they have yet to accept transgender people. I don't really know a lot about their current culture, but in mangas it seems as if they have a way to go, so this might be depicting Japan 2012's reality.

I´m not sure what that person is or want but if the person themself don´t say anything about it it is stupid to find it wrong

I assume Rei was worries because he dresses as a girl and Yamada is gay, so maybe because he likes men he might not be attracted to that. It’s never actually confirmed that Rei is transgender. You are assuming their sex/identity based on how they dress. So in theory, aren’t you just as bad? If you don’t know what they identify as use they/them. Smh. You’re the one who is deciding Rei is a ‘she my forgetting they could just not be gender conforming.

I just re-read it and the one who says that Rei is a boy is Wataru, Rei never said that.
And seeing Rei entering a female bathroom says a lot of what she identifies as.
Not that I care though, I am not the one complaining, I just wanted to say my opinion.

her* did you even read the manga?? she never once calls herself a boy and even tries to correct her friends nicely.. she calls herself "a woman at heart" whenever someone tries to say she's a boy

considering homosexuality and the LGBT community is almost completely nonexistent in Japan, Rei is considered a male (who crossdresses). We are not here to inject our personal beliefs or preferences onto the story, we are here to enjoy a good story written by a good author who lives in a community where gender identity issues are not as convoluted as they are elsewhere in the world. especially considering these are fictional characters who do not actually exist.

Lol they aren’t denying the existence of LGBT people in Japan. They are saying that the LGBT community is not very big, so often people who are trans end up labeled as tranvestites, therefore that is what Rei is identified as in the story and it’s never confirmed they are transgender.

The fact that they haven’t said it and you are assuming her gender identity by how they act/what they wear is what’s wrong! If you don’t know pronouns and want to be respectful your best bet is they/them. Check yourself.
