I don’t think he’s being hated as being gay, I think it’s competition, he’s being seen as competition. I had almost a similar situation. I had this best friend, and a gay friend. The gay friend had a huge crush on my best friend at the time and I’m not exactly the epitome of feminine woman, so my gay friend thought I was competition for the love of my best friend. My best friend was straight as a door nail and I’m pretty sure she already loved someone, anyway, my gay friend never confessed because she was so worried about me. I never told her to confess because I figured she’d take the hint that I’m not interested in my best friend like that. I wasn’t interested at all in relationships at the time, and well she lost her chance, and was forced to move on. Which was kinda sad, and for the best. She’s married now to her love of her life and my best friend, while we don’t talk anymore finally got together with the guy who worships the ground she walks on. Funnily enough he even thought I was competition, all I wanted was to hang out with my friend lmao but I was definitely treated like something to be hated lol. Now, I do see your point some stories are like that, where they have a private’s gay couple and a openly gay single comes in as the idea to competition and a test, hopefully the guy is just admirable for our uke and is confusing his sexuality for admiration and he keeps his hands to himself. Some stories don’t do that kind of thing justice.

We're all just anxious because our main uke is a lovable character and Yanagi might just find that interesting and pursue him. I'm sure that'll be an interesting flow of the story but that's gonna frustrate us all for sure. Again, we are not hating on Yanagi because he's gay
I hear you but ask yourself, if he was a straight man, would people be getting anxious about his involvement with Naruse-san? Maybe, but him being gay makes him a hated character on the assumption that he might pursue Naruse-san. Just read the comments section.
