They are together. Sensei says in the next to last frame, "I have to go home and brag about this to Tanaka." Tanaka, prior to the competition, stayed in Japan and his manager left to return to Italy, telling Tanaka, "I've booked several shows for this year. After that, you will manage yourself."
I wanted them to end up together...I guess it's an open-ending and we can guess that they will get back together with time evetually but...duh.
It was a good story though.
