Niel was the messenger for the drug traffickers, that's why he went into the forest and was attacked by the spirits.
So then he ended up getting lost and attacked/tortured the baby cub/theo and then Gio killed Niel since he was protecting Theo.
Rodd thought his friend simply got went into the forest for some random reason, he didnt know Niel was working with the drug dealers.

This is too fast paced for me in some parts its hard to appreciate the scenes and flow.
The love triangle that's coming is interesting though and ch 3 cleared a lot of things story wise.
Basically Rodd's friend deserved to die and Gio shouldn't feel guilty
