Traumas change you, but they can't do so so drastically that you're nothing like what you were. I feel if he hadn't had a little bit of the current him already, the kidnapping would have just broken him and not made him who he is. The trauma made that ruthless part come to the fore since it was that part that was necessary for him to get through it.
