It is not actually the mangakas story, she just did the illustrations ... the very first chapter has an explanation that she was honoured to have been the one to illustrate this story (it may have been a light novel prior to this-that seemed to be what was implied)
This mangaka loves the word "mongrel" doesn't she? She uses the same word in Ai no Kusabi too.
