She gave up on escaping so the man who tried to help her (previously a stranger) would not be hounded to death (meaning she didn't believe they had any chance).

If someone is desperate to escape, and they come to respect their rescuer, and they are put in a position of grave threat, and they start WEEPING as they stab and push their rescuer (stabbing in a non-lethal place) and whisper "take care," as they weep and watch them fall in the escape route where the rescuer said "trust me, " then yes, it in the text and art that she WANTED to escape but decided to sacrifice her freedom to save her rescuer.
