i think painter, because instead of him denying that he like sex and the lord and living in a comfortable life. This lifestyle is better no need to share your thoughs (feeling) just body. If you compare his life before ( in the whore house) this is better. Because before he was invested in his feeling for the learned sir and pinning to have sex with the learned sir and treated sex as something important. Now he realise that is is just two body becoming one and no emotion is needed. because he the painter is heartbroken at the moment.
