From what I understand he has been pretty much just following orders from the start to continue the strong bloodline or whatever.
Since he's been rejected a couple of times he really just wanted a relationship. He found one in his relationship with bin's dad.
Now he is protecting the child of his close friends (one of the females that rejected him that had a kid with another female) by allowing that kid to choose who he wants to be with. Protecting him from the lycan leader has been hard considering that kid is also a female and the lycan leader is an a**.
Basically, he is a man that believes in love and will protect it with his life.
