I might be interpreting it wrong but Eugene stayed b/c his dad was basically gonna die in next couple months and the evil butler dude was like "you should stay until the end to ease his passing" + he thought since Cecil was replying that she was ok + he left to find her immediately as soon as he heard she "remarried." So in short, he was really gullible (stupid) and didn't see a reason to go back. I hope in this life they get revenge.

Wasn't he kept on sending letter to her because he couldn't left his father. And it's not until he tried to find her that he found out that she had 'remarried'
