I think he just panicked and lied due to it in the moment. He’s not someone who would calculate a lie in order to be with her but his panic led him to doing something he normally wouldn’t do. Yes he should probably tell her and his feels along with that but saying that their relationship is broken and he deserves nothing from one lie is a sign of unrealistic relationship and friend goals. If he continues to do it it an entirely different story tho.
He couldnt help it, think about as if you were in his shoes. Pretty sure he doesnt want to lose her and it stresses him out that it leads him doing a wrong decision like a human being

I hope the FL finds out, and soon before their "date," that the rival doesn't have a girlfriend and she cancels the date with the ML and goes with the rival instead.
