He is doing everything in his power to stay by charti's side and support her (he sided w her rn f.e. and also already made clear that he stood up for her and will continue standing up for her etc) he is telling her about important deals and decisions regarding political affairs and other stuff (while w Irene he's treating her like a little girl to drink tea with). He is nearly always siding w charti when critized publicly., I think he really doing his best to help the one he loves. That Irene is the problem

He was the one that decided to humiliate her and her family in the very first introduction party by going with only Irene and got her critized publicly.
He was the one who neglected a woman for a petty revenge because her father decided to support a better candidate for the empire in the past.

I am not saying we should keep on reminding of other's mistake. It just..... if a man could hurt you either physically or mentally yesterday, he capable to do so the very next day or any other day.
but as you said that was in the first chapters, when he only knew chanti as the arrogant bitch that she was before the switch... I mean of course it wasn't nice what he did but he didn't know her (new) self yet and only based it off the conflict w the father and her prior attitude which was pretty bad like c'mon u can't really expect anyone to be nice to someone like that.
