As an objective third party i can understand that people tend to empathize with the protagonist, they lash out on anyone in story contributing to that person's agony and to people irl who enjoy that character's suffering...they can actually interact and argue with them though. If you read http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/maki_chan_wa_kare_to_sex_shitai/ and then comment on how the rape sex was hot you're gonna have to be prepared for some backlash including some suggestions for therapy. Idk why people don't just 'stop reading either though, not all stories are marked so there's that and once they start reading they're invested.
