i think what he means is to have business connections first so that when he starts bringing out his riches it won't be surprising cos if he uses his money now some idiots would try to rob him or spread rumors that he's a thief but if he's a bigshot in merchant industry it will be difficult for pests to trouble him or question his affairs. hope that was helpful ╮(￣▽￣)╭

I think even in those times an unknown person can't appear with a bunch of money without a background to justify it so he needs to do the equivalent of modern money laundering

or have successful businesses that bring him real money and not just money laundering.
