my guess is that the duke wanted veronica to marry the crown prince, but since she was infertile, she couldn’t have since he would need an heir.

But before killing Elena she said that she'll have her baby (Elena's baby) live and call her mother until she (Veronica) will have a baby with the crown prince. So there might be another reason as to why she has faked her death.
Veronica probably couldn't snag the prince herself with her awful ugly personality. Therefore her family faked her death so Elena can do all the work for the prince to fall in love with her. Just a theory bc idk how sustainable this plan is bc how long can Veronica act like sweetly Elena without the prince finding anything suspicious? Guess We'll find out if he really knew and loved Elena or if they're marriage was on a superficial level (meaning Elena was also swindled by the prince as well )

Personally, I think she (Veronica) found it troublesome, for many different reasons (the hatred or more like envy received from others, murder attempts, conflicts with other women from the social circle and so on) as I remember Elena mentioned in the first chapters, so finding out that there's someone that looks like her seemed as the best option to evade all that and go straight for the win (meaning to enjoy life after Elena accomplished all those things on her behalf). I might be wrong tho.
