He has a cd on his ability that switches position with a shadow of his choosing, and since he chose to use it to get to the raid a few chapters back it's most likely still on cd and that's why he had to use different means (if that is what you meant with switched out)

it definitely feels like a long time has passed since the progression of the story is going in a slower pace atm but (as far as I see it) him going into the gate/starting the raid and the gate fully opening at the school was practically taking place at the same time : )
