I think it was just really weird phrasing, and it seems like he’s marrying a friend to act like cover. It’s not uncommon for those who live in unsupportive communities to suppress who they are to fit in/ avoid discrimination.

Not necessarily, the friend he is marrying knows he’s gay so this is most likely a marriage of convenience/ a “beard” situation. In the past this type of thing happened a lot between lesbian and gay couples (at least in the US).
Just because love is usually the reason, doesn’t mean it is for everyone. It also doesn’t mean it’s destined for failure. I know that if I get married it wont be because of romantic love.

I think he meant "from the gay life" like meeting up with guys at bars, etc. He's gong to settle down with a lady who accepts that he's gay, so it's not like he's becoming straight. She seems to be a long-time friend and regard him as close family.
It's still so sad though. :(
