Yes. At the time christianisme was persecuted so for sure he dies there. My take on it is he told his lover to go ahead to free him from this country and give him a chance to discover another world even tho he knew he wouldn’t get out or even survive. The message the lover send were probably not even read by his lover. He was probably already dead.
