RIGHT??? I thought Nagizuka basically becoming that awkward third wheel for Makoto and Shiro to further their relationship/do kinky shit was kinda refreshing in a sense.
Like you said, most of the time the author decides to have some sort of redemption arc or spin-off for the side character/asshole character and although sometimes it really plays off well (Ogeretsu Tanaka has a series that's a really good example of this) I get tired of seeing it 'cause most of the time it's literally a character I couldn't care less about or they had hardly any panel time. I just don't see it as being necessary majority of the time and they don't really do anything for me 'cause I've already got a bad impression of them in the first place lol
I agree it was refreshing and awkwardly funny. I really hope that author won't decide to do a spin-off about him. On his own he's not an interesting character at all.
And that's where a story about an asshole character has sense - when they are interesting characters. Like in the Ogerestsu Tanaka's series you've mentioned. I don't remember his name, but he was intriguing character from the start, so even if I hated him I was still interested in him. But yeah, most of the times those characters are only in the story to be assholes, other than that they have no qualities and I don't care to read a whole story about them and how their childhood/family/society made them the way they are

And I rather like that the "friend" guy was pathetic till the end. Not everyone has to be redeemable and not everyone has to have a happy ending. It's kinda tiring how in yaoi every rival/dumped character has to have a redemption arc and a ship of their own (I'm looking at you Love is an illusion and your psycho bitch arc). Sometimes I just want them to stay miserable
