Apparently Nina is the reincarnation of the lover that the King sacrificed to save 99 people. Anyways, the Kings of this country are continually getting reincarnated and tortured by the curse resultant from the sacrifice that happened. The only way to end the cycle is by making amends to the reincarnation of the lover; but each reincarnation of the previous Kings has resulted in the early death of the reincarnation of the lover; even Ricardo made the same mistake in the previous timeline when he killed Nina.
Nina is actually the sister of the Pope (Beato, the brunette scholar). In the previous timeline, Nina was killed because supposedly, the Saintess powers was going to be transferred to her (don't know how) . Everyone, including Ricardo, Dio, Leo, Beato, and the Saintess played a part in deciding Nina's death. I think Beato realized too late that Nina was his sister, and he was eternally guilty about this.
In the current timeline, Nina ends up with the King; the Saintess is kind of like a temporary pain-reliever, as opposed to Nina who is actually, the permanent cure.
Later on in the timeline, the Saintess loses her powers and continues the rest of her life with the Pope.
