Ma dude is alive. In the very last chapter(author's letter), the author said that she/he is planning on doing the next story that is related to blood link(like a side story maybe). She/he also mentioned that we will be able to see both of them in that story, meaning he is alive.
I mean, why would the author include Eric in the side story if he's dead?
