You all put modern standards on this story that's clearly set in a regency era (suprise suprise, they have old-fashioned logic). I like it because the conflict is within their relationship and they aren't inherently bad as shown by their environment and the actions they take to survive it. This story is unbelievably real in many cases.
You do realize they both know nothing about each other, like really know anything about each other? They are strangers, I'm not going up to a rando and say I'm on my period. I was reluctant to tell my male teacher that I'm on my period when I needed to go to the nurse and it's 2020. A period is always something that's been a weird subject to talk about. Hell, even family members like brothers don't even want to talk about periods with their sisters cus they find it gross.
