I know what story you're talking about and shit, it's unbelievable how such a crazy horrible things could happen in world.
It's definitely a bit different here. I mean, there's still no explanation, but from what I've seen, this is some criminal organisation, I don't why they used those people though, maybe some hard labor, anyway, their leader is definitely not a religious fanatic.

Its not a movie but a documentary, you can go to YouTube and look up the Jonestown massacre, 900 people including children died by cyanide in their alleged "paradise", they were all in a cult.

Im pretty sure this cult story is based on a real life incident I saw in a documentary where this religious leader took a bunch of people to an island exactly like in the manga bc of faith or smn and they started facing financial or political difficulties and all of them fed their kids and themselves poison and died, pretty fucking crazy
