That is pretty reasonable honestly, thinking a little bit more could help her... She could have played along with the empress to lessen suspicion.

Maybe, just maybe... The author wanted to emphasize that Canaria is a human... She might be a bit clever on some things but she is vulnerable also to make bad decision and make herself suffer for that bad decision she has made.
Cause her not predicting the future becane now her huge obstacle for her to survive
