After the divorce and his father rejecting him he lost his father name and took his mother. So it makes perfect sense

Jaspers parents could’ve gotten divorced and he took his mother’s name. If you remember he’s flashback it’s more likely that’s why his surname changed

I don't know if this is correct or not, but remember when he first came to elementary school(or was it middle?) a little late than the others because he was in a car accident? He had to stay in the hospital for a while and I'm guessing that was when he met Hart. Shortly after that incedent, his parents got divorce and he assumed his mother's last name. After he got out of the hospital, he never met Hart again, so he forgot about him OR they somehow lost their memories which is an even bigger plot twist.
