What I heard is that the had some kind of surgery. And for the last 3 or so years he only released only 5 to 7 chapters on the dark continent. So because of his health they neex to find a solution were they can keep he's health up and making chapters at a steady pace.

It's still really hard to tell. Like you said, it already Dec. I did a hard core search for it yesterday in any news. There's no new ones. Maybe in my country (America) there's no news but Japan might. Sorry my info could be wrong.
The author is coming back soon. There has already been some pictures of his new work on Facebook hunter x hunter site. He is going to be on the same magazine as naruto was on. Or so I've heard. Hope this helps anyone's heart feel lighter. ╥﹏╥
