Turns out the OG Nina was just a "sacrifice." After she tried to help the saintess runaway the priest/pope got involved and said that an innocence needed to be killed. The res haired scientist came up with the idea, the king approved it, and the knight was the one to behead her. They didn't think anything of it or her cause no one knew her and the story played out.
