I just assumed that he put his mind at ease or something idk
Maybe it’s like how the dead need to have peace of mind to pass on to the afterlife. I think he just needs some thing in his heart that will make him want to stay, along with somebody who is willing to let him stay.

Did it explain how they will stop him from going back? It kind of just glosses over the fact that he turned transparent and non corporeal.
