I think he was treating yongyong badly on purpose, so he would love her more for her kindness and want to protect her. The dragon will care for her because he likes her not in fear of dad, so he will do a better job.
Yeah that's what i thought too but later on in the shower he was listening to their conversations and smile which means he did that on purpose cuz he knows his daughter will secretly gives him delicious food if he gave him the bad ones and thinks that the dragon will favor her, treats his daughter better from then on instead of only obeying his words
