I hope there is more background on the MC's family situation. Because right now he looks like a little shit and I agree with the mom. If you are barely getting by with the cat, to the point where he has to skip meals to feed the cat, he should give it away. He is in school with his parents footing the bill. If they can't afford the luxury of a pet, to the point where he had to go to a show just to get money for said cat, then he really is irresponsible.
