A slight spoiler but it's not a simple case that he has bad self esteem. There's a reason he wears a mask and not everyone will think he's handsome like she does if they saw his face. It night be better to wait for the story to develop without jumping to conclusions based on the opening chapter.

The story hasn't explained as yet why he's wearing the mask and thinks he's ugly. You've jumped to conclusions. It's not as simple as he's got bad self esteem. There's a magical reason so just wait until the story gets there. Her telling him he's handsome won't fix anything.
