People used to come up with shorthand for names. Rob for Robert, Rich/Rick for Richard etc
Then they made nicknames that rhyme with them. It was pretty common for someone named Richard to have Hick or Dick as a nickname because they rhymed with Rick. It's the same reason people named Robert are sometimes called Bob. I don't think anyone chooses to name their kid that anymore but I have a neighbor who is quite old and everyone calls him Dick even now. The name Dick came before the slang term for sure, but no idea how it became a slang
Im not native english speaker, Im asking this because I don't know and I genuinely curious. So, why is a penis called a 'dick' and why someone named their kids 'Dick'? Actually which one exist first, the dick(penis) or Dick?
