So basically jasper found out that the reason why hart wanted to hold hands a “balance out the luck” was because he wanted to kill himself. Since he was so lucky, all of his attempts had been failures. The second half of the chapter is a flashback to Hart’s past. He’s with his family and journals regularly. He has a pretty happy life, and he’s not really thinking about luck being a curse at this point (this is pre-suicidal days.) Him and his family were going on vacation but Hart left his phone at home so they decided to go back for it- however they got in a car crash in doing so. This crash is probably what kills his whole family (except him cause he’s “lucky”) and ultimately orphans him.
