The body they are in now is biologically female. In one of the earlier chapters it said they were living as a man due to certain circumstances but they never really specified. The original body was called gay because they were known as being a man and they were attracted to men. Hope that helps :)

Oh yeah, btw, the novel went into more detail about why she had to cross dress. Fu jiu’s dad is like really into the patriarchy type of succession thing, and jiu’s mother knew that they wouldn’t be able to survive if jiu’s gender was found out. She’s from the countryside and gave like a lot of money for her husband to be able to get to where he is, but he abandoned her for his mistress, and if jiu has not been a boy, he would’ve never given anything to jiu or her mother. So she did it for both her and jiu’s survival as she had invested all her money into the company, despite being treated like sht by that ungrateful bastard.
