I feel like the ex fiancé did it cuz the mating could go wrong and the bride can die. I feel like this was an attempt from her and her family(powerful I assume) to save their skin.
I think then story is going the ex-bride route, but I don't thinks that's the reason. I mean, she even said to him, she didn't believe "he will die without his bride" superstition. If it really was the ex-bride scheme, is gonna be very cliche/predictable, but I won't mind it much since everything else is good.
My 'what if' is very complicated so I don't think is gonna be like that although it would be awesome if it was. (⌒▽⌒)
