You need to remember that the time depicted in this manhwa is different than ours. In their society (it seems to emulate Recency or Victorian England) marrying someone you just met or someone you've never met is not uncommon. A woman would grow up fully concious of the fact that she will probably not be able to choose her own husband and it will be chosen for her. Cedric himself came to propose to Emily without meeting her, he was fully prepared to marry her even if they did not suit each other well because that is the norm. I actually think this manhwa has the details down much better than other manhwas in the same genre, like with the detail of the dance card or the fact that since he asked and somebody heard him do so, is almost an ipso-facto that they will marry, there is no backing down and Dylan's father's reaction is also very accurate. Other manhwas play it fast and loose with the Regency and Victorian rules (like the divorce thing, which would hardly ever be possible, or the having multiple legal wives, or the FEMALE characters attending school with the male characters which was completely unheard of) and usually I give it leeway but it's also nice to see a story adhere to the setting rules like this from time to time.

Well that’s not what I’m asking but ok. What I was asking was about my conflicted feelings on how she was basically forced to accept the marriage proposal. The ml was unnecessarily putting pressure on her. He didn’t even think about the consequences of his actions on her reputation if she were to decline (and she wanted to). This has nothing to do with him asking for marriage with a total stranger, this is unnecessary pressure on a young lady who has to think of her family’s reputation. and that grandpa is so ridiculously rude into pushing his descendant to marry a family because he couldn’t do it himself. The grandpas mindset is kinda twisted if you think about it. This in my mind doesn’t have that ‘realism’ feel you guys are talking about.
But you also need to know that none of these authors have lived through the time of their creations. They are just making a world for their characters to create the most interesting of stories. And none of the stories are actually placed in historical Earth. They are in new countries in a new world. So don’t expect realism from these stories like women who can’t go to school and other stuffs. And I honestly don’t sense the realism in this story. If we are talking about the Victorian age, nothing about the females personality seems realistic. Would a nobleman really allow his two daughters to choose their husband instead of just accepting it (especially since man is of higher status than he is). And there’s so many stories with the ‘stranger marriage’ thing which is almost everywhere, dunno how this story is unique in that way.

No you're right in that sense but I felt like the pressure and the view of society is actually quite a good representation of the real choice a lady would have at the time. I'm not saying it's totally accurate, it's not but I'm just trying to say that for once it's not as ridiculous as a Victorian style story type with a woman going to school in a miniskirt uniform with other men.
I mean just talking about France, until after the 1960's it was still super unusual to have co-ed schools.
So in this sense and the fact that her engagement is decided without her explicit decision, I felt it reasonably reflective of it.

Lol, it's basically the same problem. You see it as him putting pressure on her, and it is indeed pressure, but you are seeing it from the point of view of a modern woman who has a choice of saying no. She never had a choice of saying no. Not to him, but to any man, it would have to be a very, very bad candidate for her family (who is in dire straights financially and socially speaking) to refuse the marriage. They are clearly a close-knit family and that's great because it gives her more freedom, but realize how she doesn't really object to marrying him per se, she objects to the fact that they don't really see eye to eye (plus she has the overview of knowing that his first wife will die). I totally understand your point that is a bit pushy, but within the settings of the world, is 100% normal.
And about your other comment of not expecting realism, it all comes down to world-building. If the author had expressively stated that this is an entire new world with its own rules and completely different from ours, then sure, go ahead, do whatever you want. Think Abandoned Empress, Who Made Me a Princess, A World Ruled by Cats, They say I was Born a King's Daughter... in all those stories, a very specific society with its own societal rules is established from the beginning, so one can go ahead and frame the story in the context of that society. The author has all the control. However in stories like these, in which the setting is not clearly stated and the worldbuilding limits itself to the European-sounding names and titles, and European looking clothes and buildings, the author cannot expect the audience not to make the connection and frame their story within that connection. It is an escape of having to world-build, because the rules are already done. It's like, if you read a novel about the modern era with the modern woman, you'd be mad is she starts behaving all meek and fully subservient to her male partner, unless you are given clear circumstances of why this is so. You get mad because you know the current society, and you know that modern women usually don't behave like that. The same occurs here. Without any additional information, we can only judge the story by the values of the historical era we know, even if its fantasy.
Ummm... I’m quite.... angry? Conflicted? Confused? These negative feelings I’m getting from this is quite a new feeling. I just think they pushed too much onto the mc. Like, if I was in her situation, I’d feel so stressed and helpless. To be forced into a marriage with someone I don’t like because their soon-to-be dead grandfather is basically begging them too. It’s so stressful. I’m having mixed feelings about this. From the description, I’d thought they’d have more chemistry, but all I see is her protecting her younger sister, not love with the duke. The plot is too quick to go right into the engagement. Wish they at least let them cultivate some feelings so that it doesn’t seem like the mc was forced into accepting it. Idk. Mixed feelings.
