That was heartbreaking all through out but there's a sense of relieve at the end, they both knew they still love each other and want to stay with them at the PRESENT.
The end wouldn't really matter at this point, whether they always stay together or bid their goodbyes again, they both knew what they had was real. There will always be some things that will stay the same while some things will get swept away by time. It's now that matters.

It's perfect that this ending wasn't really the end but an open-ended one. That was so well-done and I just love how it is written. It really hits you where it hurts and they do it so good
Ahh... Im still at ch 9 and all the throwbacks when they're in high school and still in love is giving me heartaches. How nice love is, only in the beginning.
