dunno I have more of a feeling that the characters never learned to love themselves and therefore they do not realize that they might not have been in love in the first place but think they are! And since they cannot learn to forgive themselves they play victim and are assholes to everyone else which ensures that they are trapped in a cycle!

I hope Haruki visits Sakai and learns the art of letting go!
