He didn't cheat, its because her family- mainly her father (I think, its been a bit) abused her mainly because of her stutter making her extremely self-conscious about it. (It didn't help that she was made to believe her husband left her because of it, when reality Riftan was in battle and believed Maxi didn't want to be with him.)
