I’ll give a brief explanation of the end conversation ^^ the prince asked the baron why he asked to bring the painting to his house instead of mildred’s. The reason was because “it was just a house full of women” and he wanted to “protect them.” To this the prince asks if the baron is interested in anyone from the barne’s, to this the baron said “no” and said he was more so interested in the house itself. This was bc it was the prince’s grandmother old place. If the baron wanted to buy that mansion, if anything happened the barne’s they have no reason to refuse. In the end they could just sell the painting :’)

He might've been joking but he said if need be he would swap out the painting for another one so they wouldn't be able to get their money's worth for it. That would drive them in a corner since their financial situation is dire then the Baron would be able to take over the house which is why everyone is upset at him cause even as a joke that's a shitty thing to say

What I've been thinking

(as a continuation for the top comment above me) Also, since her husband died, they are really low on funds. They don't even have servants and have to do everything themselves in such a large mansion. The painting was supposed to help their financial issues.. But if the Duke keeps it, and waits until Mildred is really desperate for money, he can offer to buy their house and there's no way she would refuse if it's to help her daughters survive. In a way, Mildred will have to rely on him for money, and sell the house which was supposed to be passed down to her daughters. It's such an underhand plan... Ughh what a snake.

I don't wanna defent that bastard if what all of you said is true. But because we all can agree that he is a snake maybe he is thinking of forcing Mildred to marry him.
