I think he's trying to convince himself that he's in love when in reality he only 'likes' her but is not quite in love. He says he can't help but do things halfheartedly and while he's trying to fix this, his motivations seem to be driven by outside comparisons -so you have some hope there. I personally hope they stay friends though, sorry! ╮(￣▽￣)╭
